This course is made up of the following two-hour sessions – you can choose which sessions to attend when you sign up:
SESSION ONE: Becoming a research writer
In this session students will learn:
- the importance of developing good writing habits
- different tools of the trade
- to read like a writer
- elements of effective academic style
SESSION TWO: Structure and flow in extended writing
In this session students will learn how to:
- write effective introductions and abstracts
- improve structure and flow in their writing
- create a niche for their research and demonstrate originality
- use general to specific and specific to general patterns effectively
- structure information logically from old to new
SESSION THREE: Writing critically about the literature
In this session, students will learn to:
- synthesise the literature around their own argument
- foreground their own argument in relation to the literature
- build a confident voice as an academic writer
SESSION FOUR: Writing about research methods
In this session students will:
- learn what to include in research design chapters
- learn the difference between methodology and methods
- discover examiners’ common complaints about research design chapters
- learn to explain your own research design clearly
SESSION FIVE: Final chapters and editing
In this session students will:
- learn to structure discussions and conclusions
- learn to make claims effectively
- learn to evidence claims effectively
- hone strategies for editing and proofreading
SESSION SIX: Formatting your Thesis
In this session, students will discover how well-presented work gets higher grades. This thesis-formatting workshop will teach students all the tips and tricks to get the most from Microsoft Word. Students will learn how to meet academic standards and to give their work a professional edge.
